All I’m going to say about this is that we got what we deserved. If we wanted utopia, we got it. If we asked for graphic design to be simplified to accommodate as many n00bz as possible, we got it. Every designer has to find their own way, their own principles. Then apply those principles to their work with diligence and loyalty. Running back into the comfort of old forms or styles of the past (see Swiss Modernism) won’t save us. We have a well-connected community but we don’t use it to help each other. We don’t discuss each others work in critical or constructive ways. Pertaining to this example, what is boring about this design meme is the stability. You can have insane, skewed, chopped up, warped letterforms but they’re so often placed in triangular, centered layouts. There is some rhythm, but the plane is filled. How is tension created? How does proportion and scale play a role in this? etc. etc. If anyone would like to discuss this further feel free to message me.
